The UNESCO World Heritage site of Jelling was the focal point for large and radical changes in Danish society during the Viking Era. The two famous runestones of Jelling tell the story of the unification of Denmark and the intent for cultural integration with the rest of Europe. It is the story of the beginning of a dynasty and the conversion to Christianity. Jelling tells of these events, not only with runestones, but also with monuments so large that they could compete on an international scale. Curator Adam Bak from the Danish National Museum tells the story of how the North and Europe collide in Jelling and how the changes in 10th century Denmark had continental repercussions.

Der Vortrag findet im Rahmen der Wintervortragsreihe des Museums für Archäologie Schloss Gottorf statt, zu dem auch das Wikinger Museum Haithabu gehört, das 2025/26 zugleich Veranstaltungsort ist. Die Reihe steht in diesem Winter unter dem Motto: „WIKINGER OHNE DÄMMERUNG: FORSCHUNGEN ZUR WIKINGERZEIT IN SKANDINAVIEN“.
